Let's have some BBQ at K81

May 7th is the date for the 3rd annual Kansas City area flyin. This flyin is scheduled to coincide with Nascars visit to the local area. The truck racers are in town on the evening of the 6th and the 7th has the sprint cars running around the Kansas City speedway at speeds my mouse can only dream about. If you do not like the racecars at least come out for the BBQ at Paola at 1100 am. I am sure Mike will join in later with more race details.

This is the 3rd annual Paola fly-in. The location is convenient as it is not far southwest of Kansas City outside of the class B. Park on the ramp and walk just yards to the restaurant. This is a popular place for pilots as planes land frequently while we are eating and they come in to dine. So good food, good friends....what more could you ask for?

After lunch, you can join a group of us for an evening at the races. So far I know of 5 going to the races. Linda and I as well as Lee Cole of Lake of the Ozarks, his son and two friends will be attending. This is an evening "night" NASCAR race with most of the well known nationally recognized drivers in racing. I like to arrive at the races by 3 or 4 p.m. to just hang out and watch the pre-race activities. The race starts after 6 p.m. and will end around 10 p.m. Since it is late, we are staying that night at a hotel.

If you are interested in the Kansas City Speedway NASCAR race, please e-mail me for more information. Either Lee or I can let you know where we have seats so, if you like, we can help you find seats near us. My e-mail is: [email protected].

Join us at Paola for some great barbequing!

I have it on the calendar. Hopefully the weather will be better this year. Looking forward to trying the barbeque out!

I'm planning to fly in for the BBQ - not planning to stay for the NASCAR.

Denis, any interest in a formation flight / photo op down to KC?

Sure, sounds like fun. Your flight path will be to the east of mine, but we could meet up over northern Missouri some place. We can coordinate when the date gets closer.

Its nice to see a little more interest this year. Maybe the low fuel price will help sway some others to come out. Its 3.10 a gallon right now.

I'll call Kyle Setrum and see if he's planning to go. He and I got some good air-to-air shots when we departed Abel Island.

This fly-in is just three weeks away today. We are on a roll and have a nice group coming for lunch. If you want good food and a chance to meet great friends, plan on attending. Your presence is our greatest need and the more, the merrier.

I'm going to try and make it for the BBQ. We won't be staying for the NASCAR. Weather permitting, this will be my first BAC event! I'm looking forward to meeting everyone! Curt

Looking forward to meeting you Curt! We are on a roll now so I hope more will join in and consider coming. Let's fill the restaurant with BAC'rs.

This fly-in is just around the corner. The weather looks good for Saturday. Sunny and high temperature about 80 F. If you haven't been to this fly-in, you will be pleased if you attend. Fly in and taxi to the ramp and you are just steps away from the restaurant. For those of you who are not into BBQ cuisine, there are plenty of other options to order. Here's a link to their web site: http://www.websmokin.com/ where you can find their menu. Good flying, good food and good friends. What more could you ask?

Just took a look at the weather, looks ok from southern Iowa south with a front dropping down in the evening. If the that holds we should be good to be there.
Mike, that was a nice email you sent out. Hope it raises some interests.

Linda and I are looking forward to seeing you. We will get a chance to return your donut change equipment as well. We won't be returning home until Sunday so we will be making a decision Friday based on Sunday's weather if we will fly or drive. Either way we will be there. It will be good to see the rest of those who have said they will be there. There is only one of you I have not met. We will take care of that Saturday. I hope more who have not gone to a fly-in will come. You don't need to know anyone when you get there. You will have friends when you leave. That's the Beech Aeroclub way.

Thanks for keeping up with this Mike, I have been in the middle of owner assist annual and the inspection part was done today. All i have left to do is put the panels on and the interior back in. Spring weather is iffy hope it works out for all involved this year.

Sent you an e-mail, Mike. I still do not have my overhauled starter installed due to shtupid guide pin stuck in the engine case. Drill the center of the pin, get an easy-out started, apply dry ice directly on the pin until it turns all frosty, then vise-grip it out. That is the plan for this weekend, so no BBQ for me. :( Ya'll have fun.

P.S. I believe I have a source for the dry ice - anyone know a source of an incredibly hard and sharp drill bit capable of drilling the hardest steel roller bearing I've ever seen?

Tom, there are straight flute carbide drills for that purpose. http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-drill-bits/=12aavzy Run it fast with a light feed. They use dowel pins and it will be case hardened, so when you break through the case it will be soft. Or grind through the case and then you can drill the soft core with a regular drill bit. Touch the case and your regular bit will be done.

The non=aviation forecast for Iowa and St. Louis now has a 30% chance in Iowa and 20% in St. Louis of storms after 1 p.m. Let's keep a keen eye on this as we get closer. Fly safe.

We had a good turnout today:cool: Three airplanes and two cars. 11 people in all. I think half are staying for the race tonight. One group has tickets for the pit area so they should really see a lot of action. Hope all flyers made it back home safely.
