Let's have another 'round in Texas - - March 5th

Thanks for the kind words, Greg.

DETAILS, DETAILS:

Those attending were:
Nelson - - your smiling host from San Antonio, TX
Dwayne - - with his 1977 Sundowner (sweet plane) from Shreveport, LA
Richard - - from Livingston, TX
Derek - - and his co-pilot Jennifer from north Houston
Leonard - - with co-pilot Duane from Shreveport
Two of the five planes had those drooped tips for us to examine.

Dwayne and Richard were there when I arrived and invited me over to the BAC table. Clouds kept me in San Antonio until about 8:30 am. The Skyline serves breakfast until 10:45 am and I arrived (you guessed it .... close but no cigar) at 10:45 and a few minutes after they had turned up the grills. Even some whining and puppy eyes couldn't get the kitchen to produce pancakes or eggs. Sooooo close .....

Derek impressed all of us with his new aileron bushings (NO play what-so-ever), and then it was off to each aircraft to check the looseness and compare. This moved on to a tail cone discussion (I had brought my show-and-tell of the fiberglass one I am making) and also Jesus bolt checks. Some planes didn't have the special blue head fastener ... a great heads-ups for the owners. Time was also spent wiggling the outboard edge of each stabilator, with mine a great example of no play on the right side and just a tad of wiggle on the left.

Richard got a quick tutorial on how to make that trumpet cap and many photos were taken of my nose gear (aka - Buck Rodgers axle).

Some of the group headed for the museum, Richard departed, and I went to fuel over at Johnson. Then the big mistake of the day. I used their restroom and then found myself outside the airport perimeter with no way back in. I waited ... pushed call buttons ... shouted at the fire station ... and eventually had to walk from the far end of the field all the way back to the tower. The restaurant there let me back in. In total, over 50 minutes (that's not a typo) to get back to my plane.

If you fly to Tyler, the gate locking attitude is VERY much a no tolerance event. Just getting from the plane to the Skyline Cafe was a challenge. And assistance may not be readily available. Double check before you leave the perimeter. Live and learn ..... dude.

Nelson,
Thank you very much for arranging a fun time in Tyler. Really great to meet some fellow plane-nuts. Sorry I had to leave so soon. Great flight back, made it to the house with just a few minutes to spare before care giver had to leave.

Richard
