With only a month to go until Saturday February 12, 2022... it's time to test the ice.

This measurement was made Wednesday January 5th. Scroll down a little for the video.

More closer to the event.

February 12, 2022 is the BAC date but as of January 13, 2022 the ice isn't ready yet. Presently it's 4" but need 12" for safety.

The recording for ice conditions is 603 271-7398. The message is changed more frequently as the ice matures.

Miscellaneous photos:      https://www.facebook.com/AltonBaySeaplaneBaseandIceRunway/photos/2489746201266955.

Note:  If you land on the ice in Alton Bay, New Hampshire (B18) you get a certificate from the Northeast Region. Any 2022 landing date qualifies. If you fall through the ice into frigid Lake Winnipesaukee we will send you a sympathy card and one to your aircraft insurer.

Ice is 8 inches as of today. Getting close to solid for plowing. This weeks cold snap did some good.

Good info... Lets hope the first Touch Down doesn't turn into a Splash Down! As previously noted in the Forums... "Musketeers Can't Swim"!

As of today, January 18, 2022, the ice thickness is "half way there" according to (603 271-7398) the official recording from Alton Bay.

8.5 inches in NOT enough.

On January 22nd the managers of the Ice Runway in New Hampshire reported 8.5" to 12" thickness of ice at Alton Bay (B18) on Lake Winnipesaukee.

They are waiting for 12" everywhere to open the lake for flying.

Our fly-in is Saturday February 12th.

Call the recording 603 271-7398 for the most accurate information.

This photo of me (left) and our president Jeff Knight is posted for entertainment purposes. Nothing to do with the thickness of ice.

Ice creepers are mandatory studded tires optional

Here’s the problem with ice creepers: if you try put them on plane side, on the ice, you’ll fall on your butt and see birdies.

if you put them on in the plane…picture what they’ll do to your wing skin on exit😱

Steve Cote (I did the former. I think Corcoran has pictures)

The ice runway may be plowed tomorrow  (Friday January 28, 2022). That's the GOOD news.

Now for the other news... the area of the thinnest ice on the runway is now 10" thick. Most of the runway has reached the needed 12".

Of course, there is a fly in the ointment. The huge snowstorm predicted for this weekend will make the runway unusable until it can be groomed.

We are trying for a BAC event on Saturday February 12th. 11am at Alton Bay is the posted time. However making this work has been described as "a crapshoot". So, go to B18 when your circumstances are best. That's anytime the runway is open this year. Document (in any honest way) your participation on Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire and soon you will get instructions on how to turn that into an official BAC atta-boy.

Call the recording  603 271-7398 for the information.

Ice runway still not open as of Feb 5th but exceptionally close.

It may open tomorrow Feb 6th after the ground crew gets a plow out there.

Reminder to check the Alton Bay status and notams.

"Trying for the weekend".

Call the recording  603 271-7398 for the information. We may land on the ice soon.

Ice runway opened on Feb 6th. Feb 8th it is Notam’ed closed until Feb 10th.

Hopefully that means that they are preparing everything for our arrival Feb 12th.

Ice runway is open today Friday and looking good for this weekend despite the warm weather.

I currently plan to head for ALTON bay in the morning and then head over to LCI for fuel and lunch.

Don't for get your Camera... We want to see good Pictures!

Rob Staab is your contact member of the BAC for the Ice Runway Fly-In tomorrow.

He will be the official link to the club at Alton Bay on February 12. So, check in with him if you can to get counted.

Rob has been designated as the very first DEPUTY REGIONAL DIRECTOR of the NORTHEAST REGION. That is a big help to me. Rob has done this a dozen times.

I am out of the region this week.

No matter when you land this year take a photo of your plane on the ice and send it to me for a real BAC attaboy.            [email protected]   Put ICE in the heading.

6:30AM report. Ice runway is closed today due to excessive overnight melt and winds out of the Southwest.

Tomorrow may be another day to try after an overnight freeze.
