Fly-in to Fairbanks Alaska

Headed to Andromeda
There will be two airplanes making the trek from BAC TAC on the 22nd of June to Fairbanks. I think our first destination will be Cut Back, MT. Then cross the border to Canada. We will be picking our way over the Alaskan Higway for most of the trip (IFR?). This will be mostly a camping trip. We will be using Fairbanks as a base of operations with some day trips by airplane or car. I intend to do some fishing. So far me in my Sierra, Bob Schmidt in his Sundowner, along with Mark Weiss and his friend John Pater will all be traveling at Sundower speeds to the land of the midnight sun. We love to have another Mouse or two, or three join us for this adventure. We plan to depart for the lower 48 on or about the end of June. If you have a passport and have or can get a customs sticker, you are almost there already. This should be another interesting and fun event. I'm looking forward to some fresh Alaskan King crab and trout fillets, not to mention the camaraderie of being with these airplane nuts for a week or so.

Margie and I will be in Alaska the same time you guys are.
Look for us in a suite on the 11th deck of the Norwegian Pearl.
Starboard side... if that's the right side of the boat... er ship!

We lived in Kenai, Alaska for 16 years. A very nice airport and great place to visit. I flew a lot in that area (in airplanes that took less runway .... (!)

We returned to Texas in 2006. If you may find yourself in that town, shoot me an email and I will possibly link you up with some of my friends and some suggestions.

For Fairbanks, take the large paddle boat ride. A full day on the river and well worth the time.

Oh .... take lots of money ....

That was is a different country. Over ten years ago.
Very unique adventure. The insurance company doesn't even care any more.
But, there are members who still think water landings are a suitable option.
They don't know, "Musketeers Do Not Float".

Mark W, you've probably started planning this Alaskan flight. How does it compare (size wise) to flying from California to BAC fest with Dan?
 
i just got back from Alaska a few wks ago...get time as always. while in Fairbanks you need to run up to Chena Hot Springs for the day (they have an airport)...you will love soaking in the outside hot spring after long hours in the seat.

Flying with Dan Jonas and his wife, Adrianne, was undoubtedly the "trip of a lifetime" and was amazing. We covered 52 hours in the Duchess.
This will be around 60 hours in the other direction and will be a flying/camping trip.

Can you do the "lifetime" trip twice? Is that allowed?

I was in the Navy for 10 years, 6 month and 6 days, they are all boats to me. Is that cabin near the pointy end or the blunt end?
 
I did that to the USCG Polar Star in Puget Sound when my son was on board underway for his first Antarctic cruise. Left side front to back at 100 kts (it wasn't a Sierra), pull up, faux hammerhead turn, down past the right side at a screaming 120 kts and full throttle. I discovered the entire ships company (less the watch) was assembled on the flight deck for quarters. It was fun! Glad I wasn't in my own airplane (had to borrow one). That was a long time ago, I don't do stunts like that any more.
 
I wish you guys would stop talking about this trip...You are making the minister of finance very nervous as I keep mentioning these posts..She's worried young Skywalker (me) will chase old Obi Wan (Weiss) on some damn fool mission!!!!!

I do have my retirement to think about!!!!!!!

You can do it on-line at: https://dtops.cbp.dhs.gov/ There is a $6 surcharge to expidite the sticker. It also involves in getting an account with them so you can log in and set up your profile at: https://eapis.cbp.dhs.gov. Then you can fill out the electronic forms an send them in before your arrival. You should still call to see that they got your forms. There is a help line that you can call. I did and the lady talked me through the whole procedure. All of it is somewhat complicated, but I got through it OK. I will say to take complete notes and SAVE them. I sent my request for the new decal Saturday (I suppose it wasn't acted on until Monday). Still waiting for my decal. But, I think I can go through with my receipt. The only time I re-entered the US at Fort Pierce, they never looked at my airplane.
 
I've been into the Bahamas 3 times with only the receipt. Help line told me that was enough( receipt). I have never been asked for the sticker. Good luck
 
Seriously thinking about joining you guys. I have always wanted to fly to Alaska. Spent a year at Shemya a couple of decades ago but you could hardly call that Alaska, it was more like Siberia. Do I have to have the 12" N numbers on the airplane if I go into Canada?
 
Someone needs to put all the N number information out there. I was following a similar question on another type club about 12 inch N numbers, it's not gone anywhere yet.

BUT I can tell you that I saw the Canadian sundowner that was a BAC fest this year, and it was adorned with 2 or 3 inch numbers..., so you can obviously cross the border without them.
