Death Valley Fly-in

mvanover

Headed to Andromeda
I'm heading to Stovepipe Wells on the 4th & 5th of March and will host a BAC Fly-in there on the 5th. Only one place to stay (unless you want to camp) and at this point there are 64 rooms available. Check out the Event Calendar for more details. I hope to see you there.

5 hrs and 30 min enroute with seasonal winds. Other than typical winter weather, it might be doable.

That's a long trip for a weekend. Dunno if I'd do that. OK, OK, so I went to Arlington once.... maybe twice. But that is a "fer piece" in a Sundowner!

Marty, I have the date on my calendar. See you there weather permitting.
I always wanted to go there. Hopefully we will see some the desert flowers in bloom. They are said to be stunning.

Bump. There has to be others that find this to be a neat gathering. Come on! Lets met in Death Valley and have some fun. I'm doing my best to get my wife to go with me. She will like you if you don't talk about airplanes.

Marty - - I would REALLY like to attend, but the distance is a little much for me. Let me know if you plan a fly-in on the east side of your neighborhood.

And post photos here too!

Looking at the potential route/flight plan. Lots of restricted air space north of Vegas!!

Yes, also Area 51. But I'd take a slightly longer, but easier route a little to the South. When I flew back home from Slida, I jumped the pass and headed South. I continued South, but if I was going West I'd turn right some place past Alamosa where I could clear the terrain, and then fly Farmington, Page, LAS and on to Stovepipe. You can over fly LAS class B at 10,500. No military areas that route until you get to the Death Valley area, but you fly under those. I hope the weather is good. Bring your camera as that flight path takes you over the North rim of the Grand Canyon. There are minimum enroute altitudes for crossing the Canyon. So look at the Canyon chart and plan accordingly. Best to be with flight following. But, don't try to descend though the Class B at Vegas. Approach will give you a complete tour of the Lake Mead shore line and Hoover Dam.

Guys google stovepipe wells and show the images to your wife. I'll bet she will want to go. If that doesn't work start acting mean two weeks before and she will be glad to get rid of you for the weekend.

Count us in. It's an hour flight for me. I think I'll bring my Son and my Buddy (he's getting checked out in the Slowdowner too). Coming home the 5th I'll call the wife from Signature at KLAS (1 hour the WRONG WAY) and tell her we had to divert and overnight. (CAN'T BE TOO SAFE, RIGHT?)

I left from Boston to the airport in Death Valley. Flew from there on a scenic flight. True!

Facts: I flew commercial to Vegas and drove leisurely with family to Death Valley. However I found the guy who had a Cherokee there and he let me pay for the fuel on a scenic ride. Bringing my cute sister helped convince him. Flying around there as a government observer or something was his JOB!

I just called Stovepipe Wells Hotel. The cancellation policy is 2 days prior. Should be enough. Right now we have a few firm participants and a few maybes. If we can get just a few more, I can get a group rate. So if you have any interest to see Death Valley, pipe up! I'm going to reserve my room on or about the 3rd of February. Whatayaknow, wife wants to go! We will fly in on Friday and out on Sunday. I don't know if the RD has any fly-in funds for lunch or dinner on Saturday. Right now I have the following as firm (weather permitting):

Me and Claudia
Chris and LeeAnne Linderman
Bob and Donna (?) Lewis
Vern Davis + 2
Mark Shindel + 3

The maybes are:

Dave Stevens
Ben and Lynn Moses

If you have interest, visit the hotel website < http://www.deathvalleyhotels.com/our-hotel/ > and let me know if you can make it.

P.S. I just found out they have a campground too. If pitching a tent and sleeping with the scorpions and rattlesnakes is your thing, you will be in the right place.

Marty put me in as a maybe, I have to dump another 3/5/16 obligation first but if I can get out of that...

Dave, don't worry about restricted airspace, FF will help, worst case scenario stop at Page for fuel (use Classic or American FBO(s), great people, jet center is $1+ more/gal). Your Super can climb easy to hit the Grand Canyon SVFR rules for 10.5 through the Dragon Corridor (over the canyon, fantastic gorgeous!) or straight north of the canyon. Then go KVGT - V74 - L09 and you miss all restricted space.

Kanab, UT (KKNB) is a good alternate to KPGA with good fuel price, SS and unattended but very pretty area also. I gotta dump my calendar and get to this one.

Yeah, the MOA over Stovepipe Wells is above 3000' AGL. Coming in from the East is no problem. Stay high over the LAS class B and begin your decent after clearing it. Hit the MOA at 3,000 ft and slowly descend to pattern altitude. Contact Joshua approach on 126.55. Pretty easy. Doesn't look like we will get enough hotel rooms to get a group discount. But we only need a few more to do so.

God bless you Mike for trying!

Made reservation for 4th and 5th of March leaving on the 6th. Marty, Have you been there before? AOPA comments on airport state that it is at least a half mile walk from aircraft parking to the hotel and aircraft parking is very close to the runway.

Dave,

I have never been there. I did see that parking was close to the runway and it is in fair condition. The hotel will come to pick you up in their van. Just call them, or call me (480-882-8750). I'm not sure there will be cell phone service. Guess I should find out.
