Lots of things are possible. I think there are probably a few places to refuel between Miami and Puerto Rico that would work. That is a lot of water.

I am not sure exactly how many years ago it was, but there was a BAC member that flew a Sierra from New York to I believe it was Trinidad. He made a post and I think it was there was also an article in the BAC magazine.
Ok anyone that has been a member for 10+ years, what do you remember?

Our member "Piloto Solo" flew his Sierra from San Juan to Sacramento. Stopped by Tucson for a RON. We had a nice lunch together.

Every now and then I dream of taking a couple months to tool around the Caribbean and chart out flight paths on FF. From Florida, you'd fly to the to the Turks and Caicos for a fuel stop (with a stop in the Bahamas if you want more buffer), from there south over the Dominican and east to to Puerto Rico. You could do it in 2 hops, but 3 would be better/safer. The longest you're over open water with no land around would be just under an hour from the Turks over to the DR.

My wife and I like going to Bonaire for dive vacations. Every time we plan one, I toy around with the idea of flying there in the Sierra. I chart out the course, realize yet again that it would take 4 days of flying to get there from Toronto, and sadly put FF away.

Then add some extra time before you get in the Sierra, climb to altitude, and then get the bends.

Soto and his friend Ramon have made numerous trips from San Juan to mainland in
His Sierra and in Ramon's 182
Follow the chain
Left San Juan DR up the chain
They will be more than happy to share

I would like the details. I have signed up for a trip with Caribbean Flying Adventures in February. I think that's a perfect distinction between your airplane as a tool rather than a toy.

Donell.

He was (is?) based where I am at KHWV. Used the same mechanic at the time and we hung around together a lot. Terrific guy. Definitely the intrepid pilot type. Didn't have an instrument rating, had no desire to get one. Flew everywhere, sent pictures from across the Atlantic all over the Caribbean. Went cross country, including sending several shots of him crossing over the (lower) rockies in his carburated 180hp sundowner with a couple of cans of O2. Scud runner, nothing seemed to bother him. What can you say. I was alternately in awe and thought he was nuts - but I loved the guy. Great story teller - told a good one about being at the muskegee museum at a big reunion for Black WWII pilots with all the 95 year olds with such pride. Yeah, he had flown there in his sundowner.

Haven't seen him in a few years - but I think I recall seeing the sundowner parked in it's regular tiedown spot recently? Or not. I'll check next time I'm out there. I hope he's doing well.

Here is the link to all the .pdf copies of the BACTalk magazine that I could find and post in the Resources tab. Lot's of good information in those magazines for those that care to read them.

Enjoy!

Years ago when we still owned our Sierra, we flew from Salt Lake City to Marsh Harbor, Bahamas. Of course, most of the flight was over land but the part from Ft. Pierce, FL to Marsh Harbor was interesting. If I recall, from Florida to West End, Bahamas is only about 100 miles or so. It was a grand adventure!

When I flew to the Bahamas I first went to Andros Town to drop off supplies for a church. 218 nm from Ft. Pierce. Then back up the chain to Treasure Cay. During those flights I don't think I was ever more than 50 miles from an airport. So the "exposure" was really small.
