There will be a Wings & Wheels event at Hot Springs, VA (HSP) on August 6, 2011. This is the highest elevation (3793 ft) public use airport east of the Mississippi! I have talked to Paul Werbin and he plans to post this to the event calendar as an official BAC event. There will be cars and planes and food and aerobatics and music and dancing and, oh well, you get the idea! It's usually nice and cool at that elevation so come and cool off in the middle of the summer! It's also a great airport to add to your collection! Hope to see you there!

Sounds like a GREAT destination - might have to try this one too... After a 7K annual - I REALLY need to get my moneys worth out of flying...

This is a beautiful location. Lots of fun. And a great chance to review density altitudes for.those of.us that live at sea level.

Once again - I'll be hoping to make this one - and - if weather permits - I'd like to at least make a weekend of it... It looks like KHSP really doesn't have any accommodations located nearby so I’m looking at Greenbrier Valley... Anyone familiar - lodgings - activities - food - and - drink (And I REALLY want some good biscuits and gravy for breakfast) ???

Nice photos! Great place to fly. Beware of the downdraft on short final on a windy day. If looking for a second stop in the area or a backup.plan the lewisburg WV greenbriar valley airport was built to handle airforce one in an emergency. The entire area has some nice B&Bs and bike trails as well as some real high end resorts like "The Greenbriar" which has an underground bunker to handle congress in case of attack.

Downdraft on final...... there I was, 30 kts of wind and the deck of the Enterprise was.pitching and rolling, focused on #3 wire and suddenly.... well that dream ended....
But really it can be surprising if not expected. Especially when everything is perfect until ahout 50 agl when the brain says "what is going on here? Why is that cliff rising?" The beauty of pistons and props is that they respond so quickly. Just a bit more power and no big deal unless it takes too long to figure out what's going on. No issue at all if calm wind, pretty impressive at 15 kt.s
 
This event has been added to the BAC calendar. For anyone that flies around Virginia much, look at the Virginia Dept of Aviation Ambassador Program. Earn free stuff like bags, hats, leather jackets for flying around.
 
Lubbock Texas a few months back winds 35- gusting low 40's. On taxiing I felt her get "light on her feet" air speed was on 50kts! Taxied very slow to the fbo. Downdrafts; 2 separate trips to Catalina island ( notorious for downdrafts) came in a little high both times with no problems.
 
If you really want excitement, think about the deck of a "27 Charlie" next time. The distance from the round down to the Nbr 4 wire on the Hancock was less than the distance from the round down to the Nbr 1 wire on the "Big E". Made getting an "OK 3" pretty tough, especially at night. Of course, I was just watching from the flight deck back then. I did the Catalina approach some years back in an American Traveler. Wicked! That same airplane landed 100 ft short of the same runway a few years later. Fortunately nobody hurt bad. Scrap one nice Traveler though.

There will be food there all day and it is the home of Hot Springs Resort which is a very nice resort. It's not easy to get to but they might have special transportation lined up for the weekend. Otherwise, I agree with Paul and say that Greenbrier is your best bet. There's a good restaurant on the field and there are lots of hotels fairly close. If anyone has the brass ones to fly into W13, my home base, 2000 ft paved runway, as long as it's after 3pm when I get off work, I'll pick you up, we can go to dinner and I'll drop you off at your hotel. From there it's about a 35 minute flight.
 
Greenbrier

Hi Alan

Akron went well. My grandson Drew was 12th In super stock, and his cousin who went with us was 6th in stock.
I remember when we could land at greenbrier. It's all houses now. Where does. the time go?

Congrats! That's a great finish. To win even one round in Akron is such an accomplishment! We're starting up rally season soon and hope to qualify again next year. Next year is the 75th anniversary so it's supposed to be a big blow out!
