BAC Eclipse Viewing

bmitchell

Flight Levels
John Redmon, Bob Schmidt and Brad Mitchell met up in Gallatin, TN (M33) to watch the eclipse along with about 100 other planes ranging from Challenger and Citation jets to multi engines to taildraggers to two BAC aircraft. The crowd was probably in the 200-250 range from all parts of the eastern US. A couple that flew down from Connecticut was next to us. The two minutes and forty seconds of totality was well worth the trip! Sharing a few pictures I took, but John had far superior cameras and will hopefully post in the near future. A buddy of mine sent me the totality shot he captured.

Brad

If you guys had foil reflective panels you would look just like the sun worshippers tanning in the Swiss Alps!!! Nice photos!

M33 is a great airport. FBO left doors unlocked at night and had three rooms for campers to use instead of setting up tents for the night - no charge. And showers at no charge! They had snacks and drinks for sale at reasonable prices. NO ramp fees! Eclipse glasses for $3.00! Most places were either sold out or were asking ridiculous prices. And they were only 2nm from the eclipse center line - 2 minutes 39 seconds of totality.

I was impressed.

Our gathering of future BAC members included eclipse pies (aka banana moon pies) provided by MiMi. Great day!!

Trumpet Nelson,

I believe in 2024 eclipse will pass right over your airport!

Here are a few pictures of Brad, Bob, and myself before the start of the eclipse. I'm sure glad Brad brought the tarp.

These are just a sampling of what I took on Monday. Various shutter speeds, bracketing, etc. Did you notice the star that was visible a totality? To the left of the sun at about 10 o'clock, first picture of totality.

Looks like several pictures disappeared from my original posts. I usually limit myself to 4 images per post with no problem. That was with my older camera. The new camera most likely has larger file sizes and I will have to limit 2 to 3 images per post. Here is one that failed to post.

Great pictures John. Thanks for taking them and for posting the highlights. John's trusty digital camera has been capturing group shots at fly-ins for years, but just for the eclipse, he went out and spent a small fortune on a new camera, lenses and filters. We'll all benefit from the many pictures to come from future fly-ins. A big BAC thank you from all of us.

It paid off as John's pictures were first class. We look forward to many more pics that he takes with his new camera.
