Airport Steak House - Mattoon, IL (KMTO) - Sunday, August 30, 2015

Fly into Coles County Memorial and join us at the Airport Steak House. Home of the Elephant Ear Tenderloin. The restaurant is located on the field. Arrive by 11:45am CDT. This one is for those that have to work Saturdays. I used to only have two Sundays off a month so I know what it is like. NOTAM: Yes, the airport is currently closed. I have spoken to the airport authority and they are currently on schedule to reopen by the 28th. If not the fly-in will be held at Casey Municipal (1H8) 17nm Southeast of Mattoon. They have a courtesy car and a local restaurant that will come and pick us up if we need it. I will post any changes as they develop.

8/22/15 Update: Good news! Spoke to the airport authority yesterday and they are scheduled to reopen on Thursday the 27th.

I still plan on coming, changed all the tires on the plane today, had a little play in the right main gear leg so i slid the cover down. one of the Jo bolts just spins freely, just ordered new ones i will have to drill new holes. but if they come in by friday i should have it buttoned up for sunday. I am only worried about the bolt pulling properly.

I still plan on it. I have a little work to do on the mains but the Jo-bolt issue is fixed. Apparently what i thought was adequate clearance between the tires and the gear legs disappeared after a high speed taxi check of the brakes. I figured the tires would grow a little but not as much as they did. I go into grass strips from time to time so went with the 17" tires. Yes they are at 22psi for anyone whom thinks i may have over serviced them. Not sure how much metal to trim from the gear leg? Anyone ever had to do this before? They were touching the gear leg and it was warm to the touch after a couple of 55 knot runs to seat the brakes.

Everyone in the midwest, if you plan on flying sunday, the winds are favorable from all directions try to head to Mattoon for lunch if you can. Be there at noon.

We had 3 member aircraft on the field for this fly-in, a Sundowner, Musketeer, and a Sierra. In attendance were Tim Vangundy and his guest Mary Freeman, Steve Powers, and John Redmon. Lunch was great, service was excellent, and the restaurant was busy with the locals. We will do this fly-in again next year.
