Western NC Fly Camp Hike and Fish (KAVL) May 20th - 23rd

Are you going to shuttle people back and forth to the airport? Would I be able to leave Sunday? How would I get to a hiking spot that I want to hike to?

I will be shuttling people back and forth. The airport is only about 15 minutes away. I have no problem taking people to and from the airport when ever needed.

There are a lot of hiking/biking trails connected to this campground by service road 5000. FS rd. 5000 will take you to the Blue Ridge Parkway from North Mills Recreation Area, about 6 miles of dirt road. 5000 is closed to though traffic (gated off about half way to the parkway) their is a trail there that takes you to the west to the reservoir which feeds North Mills River(2 mile hike from FSR). The ranger told me there is excellent fishing from the reservoir down to the camp ground, about 4 miles of steam(I didn't test this with the kids). There is only four showers at this campground, this is the only draw back I've seen. They have really clean showers and restrooms.

We saw more mountain bikers and hikers than fisherman this weekend maybe due to the excessive winds.

There are many trail accesses from North Mills Recreation Area. http://www.hikewnc.info/trailheads/pisgah-national-forest/pisgah-ranger-district/mills-river/

Alan, anything specific in mind?

6-10. I checked your interactive map and there are a lot of trails there for me to explore. How are we going to handle food? Everyone bring their own? All chip in? I can bring the following in the plane. EZ Up Tent, Gas Grill, Camp Chairs, Corn Hole, my tent, bag etc... cooler(s) camp stove, etc... What do you need?

I'm up for hiking also. Would have loved to hike a little of the AT - never been on it, but looks like plenty of trails close by. I've got plenty of camping gear I can bring also, assuming there is room in John Redmon's Sierra. Current plan is for me to fly to John's airport and take his Sierra to KAVL.

There are lots of private shuttle drivers available to help with A.T. Hikes. The great smokey park section is pretty close. Maybe a few of us could spend a few days on the trail and share shuttle costs?

There is a grocery store and restaurants about 10 minutes down the road. I have no preference one way or the other or a mixture of both and I figure snacks on the trail. I have no problems cooking at the camp or helping cook.

What I was planning on brining.

Gas Grill
BIG cooler
2 - canopy shelters
A couple of chairs
Pots, Pans, cooking utensils
Fishing Gear
Corn hole boards but cant seem to find my bags
Tables

If y'all want me to shuttle you up to the AT I have no problem with that. You will just have to let me know where and when to pick you up. I have the camp reserved already and to late for refunds. So I'll be staying in camp or close by at least.

There is a loop we cold make from camp that looks like about 14 miles total(Trace Ridge and Spencer Branch). I have no problem with that as long as I'm not packing gear. If I'm packing gear I'm only good for about 8 miles(I always over pack).

Word of advice for anyone who might not have done any hiking in the Appalachians. There will be many stream crossings, make sure you plan accordingly

JP, Nelson, Gary, you guys still in?

Scott, you know you want to get out and do some fishing, maybe a little hiking.

I have extra bean bags so probably one set of corn hole boards will do. I'll just bring my bean bags.

I'm planning on staying in camp each night but do a little hiking at least one day. I might change my mind if someone wanted to camp on top of Max Patch one night.

Thanks Alan, if I find my bags or get some new ones between now and then I'll let you know.

I don't have enough chairs for everyone so guys bring you something to sit on. I'll try to provide the large and heavy stuff.
