Join us may 12th at Miami County Airport, Paola Kansas. For our annual BBQ/NASCAR weekend fly-in. We meet at K81 for BBQ at 1100 AM then those who want to attend the night race at KC speedway fly a little closer make their way from there. Spend the night at a local motel and go home in the morning.

For those of you who have never been there, Miami County Airport-K81 (Paola, KS) is about 45 miles southwest of Kansas City. Come just for lunch or make it a weekend as there are a lot of things to do in the area including the NASCAR Race at Kansas City Speedway. Park on the apron and walk a matter of a few years to the restaurant. Fuel is usually cheap. Currently it is $426 for self serve. Here is a picture of the group that attended last year:

This is for all of you would like to but have never been to K81 before. I am not exaggerating when I say it is a matter of a few yards to the restaurant.

Never stayed in Paola overnight. Last year we landed in Lees Summit, MO and rented a car, parked it and then flew down to K81 for the fly-in and then flew back. We stayed in a reasonable hotel there and went to a Royals game that night. No game in town this time though. Hotels get high priced on the KS side of the river due to the race. We are looking for something to do either in Kansas City or elsewhere that night.

The Beaumont Hotel is a cool place for a day trip. Not so sure about spending the night. Taxing thru town is a blast and the signs say airplanes need to obey traffic laws. My plane in aircraft parking and one of the rooms for rent. I would call ahead to see if they are even open. Seemed to be a seasonal place to me.

Linda and I will be there for lunch as well. Not planning on going to the race. Lee Cole and sons go to the race. It is a long enough drive for him from Lake of the Ozarks that he would probably not come if lunch were not on race day. Looking forward to seeing all of you.

I have to be at the KU graduation at 9am to take pictures for a friend graduating. It's about 1h drive from Lawrence to Paola, so if all goes well I should be there around 11 - 1130ish.

Since I'm coming by car, I can put my back seats in and transport 3 people if needed (4 if I can't convince my wife to come along).

If anyone wants to fly into KLWC (Lawrence airport) or a nice grass-strip in Vinland (K64) and stay the night at my place (Near "Pat Dawson Billings Nature area; guest-room upstairs) let me know so I can discuss with my wife (Personally, I think it would be great for her to meet and talk to other flying spouses). For those who have not met me, I'm 35 and not owning a beech right now but still hopeful ;)

Hope this works out.

Well -- I WAS planning to attend. No such thing as too much flight time for BBQ !!

You all have a great time, and I will make it sometime in the future ... when my Sundowner and I are finally reunited .....:-D It's a logistics thing!

Nelson, Thanks for giving this a look. We fully understand that the $100 hamburger can turn into a $500 one. We will look forward to another try to lure you into the North Central Region.

Looking ahead the weather forecast while not perfect looks to be acceptable for Saturday. I hope we have a good turnout.

Is anyone planing to attend the NASCAR event that night? I might have to skip out on the lunch because of the graduation event at KU but I was curious if there was more going on later that day?

Lee Cole is going. Linda and I just got tickets to the Saturday evening race this morning so we will also be going. Right now I am struggling with whether to drive or fly. Fog here tonight forecast with 300 ft. ceilings. If we leave this evening we could get out before it lowers. Problem is that a stationary front is going to lay diagonally across Kansas all weekend. Highs in Kansas City around 90F. Highs here at KMCK around 70. Something is going to happen every day, but it won't be all day. Mostly concerned about IFR weather such as we will have tonight.

I've seen NASCAR tickets on Craig's list for below ticket price if anyone wants to explore that option.

We have the same front crossing right over us as well. In the morning I will look at all the weather data and decide if it's a go or no go. We topped out at 65F today.
