Maintenance clinic BACFest 2013

Headed to Andromeda
On Thursday Sept 19 during "Early BACFest" we are planning our maintenance clinic. Landmark Aviation has agreed to provide lunch and help with transportation in addition to a large hangar and personnel to help with the event. I will need a rough head count on who will attend to plan food. Also we can schedule a few items. We can do oil change, wheel bearing care, grease etc. Or, if someone has a particular request we can try to address it. We probably don't have time for donut change but we can definitely try to show where, when, how, logbook entries etc for as much as we can.

If you have any suggestions or requests please post here for comments. And do let me know if you are planning on being in attendance so we can have seats and food.

Anyone want to bring a video camera and record details?

Exact time can be a group decision but we can start as early as 10:00 am if needed and we can run up to about 4 pm if needed so we don't interrupt our evening plans. Sounds like anyone showing up on Thursday might be able to just join us at the hangar for lunch and then head to the hotel afterward if wanted.
The ramp area is controlled but we will have a few "approved airport escorts" available to let anyone in or out as needed.

It turns out than many of you have already indicated on your registration that you will attend. My error in forgetting that. With all the different parts of this coming together I know there will be more minor glitches. My basic plan is to have some A&Ps demonstrate and or supervise some basic tasks. I know that in the past we covered oil changes and the funky Beech lube item and fittings. But with all the new members and the years since our last demo we can probably serve the group well by covering this again. I will also see that we spend a few minutes discussing required logbook entries that are needed whenever anyone works on a plane.
But I would like to make room for anything we can cover that we missed in the past. So, let me know if there is a special item of interest and I will try to set it up.

I would love to have someone go through the rigging process, but I suspect that would take way too long!

it will seem silly to some of our A&P members and to others who have done more on their planes than I have, but I never have changed spark plugs until I was at Oshkosh this year. It isn't complicated, but I would like someone to give us some pointers on this. This would only take a few minutes and I would enjoy anything else you would like to offer.

I really hope that someone volunteers to record the workshop.

don't worry about your directing skills: Steven Spielberg will not be judging you. Just hit record, point the camera in the general direction, and collect my $20 at the end :-)

Well it looks like hitsnorth has volunteered his plane! So we will be able to do the "disassemble for storage" clinic!! Maybe next year we can do "reassemble"?
Actually thanks for the emails and suggestions I have received. We should have a good day.

I'd like to see this also... and we can always put the video up on YouTube or Vimeo for all club members to access. Please please please somebudy record it!

If no attending member has a video camera, then, in my opinion, the Club should rent a video camera and draft somebody to do the camera work. It wouldn't be expensive or difficult to do but it would be well worth it for those of us unable to attend this year. In fact, if nobody shows up with a camera, then somebody go rent one for the day and send me the bill.....if the Club won't pick up the tab. But, I'm pretty sure the Club will step up. Keep me posted.

As I recall, the club purchased a video camera (maybe 2) several years ago and the care and custody was entrusted to CVH. He was going to record his donut change on Minnie. However, Rellihan made him work and get his hands dirty, so he was unable to record the job being done. Since he's planning to fly his Sierra to KORF, perhaps he can fit them inside that big baggage door and not cause a W&B issue! :)

On the other hand, that was so many years ago, they may not have been digital cameras. Anybody got a VHS cassette we can use?

They're in a closet about eight feet from where I'm sitting but they haven't seen the light of day in many moons. I have no idea if they still work. I probably won't be there in time for the clinic. If anyone wants to volunteer to test the cameras and shoot the clinic I can ship them ahead of time. Lemme know.

Guys,

i should be there for the clinic and my digital camera does film as well. I also have editing software to produce. I might need a few SD cards to hold it all. digital film fills them up fast. I'll check into it.

I think have a digital video camera I can grab from work. I am currently based in Norfolk (U.S. Coast Guard), so it is a short drive to the airport. I will probably just leave my plane at Hampton Roads Executive for Thursday.

And yes, I am planning on attending the clinic!

Hello Roland , Welcome to the Club and thanks for volunteering !!look forward to seeing you at Bacfest ! Thanks John Persinger

The maintenance clinic will be a late morning/ early afternoon event. In order to avoid conflict with the best time for the evening boat ride we will need to finish the maintenance clinic by about 3pm to allow everyone time to degrease themselves and return to the hotel, get to the boat dock etc. while we have some flexibility in all this we really do want to finish what we start.
I will be talking to the A&Ps involved in this to decide the how and when. At the current time I foresee two planes simultaneously being demonstrated. I have a list of suggestions so far that includes:
Oil and filter change
Rigging discussion
Safety wiring skills
Spark plug care
Frame grease
Wheel and tire changes
We are still up for suggestions and the final say will be up to the A&Ps that will be in charge. But it looks like a good start and also video coverage along with free Lunch from Landmark Aviation should help make this well worth the early arrival.
