June 2 - Lunch in LA (Lower Alabama)

TomKinstler

Initial Climb
Went to Lulus in Gulf Shores, AL for lunch yesterday, and my wife (an experienced fried shrimp taster) declared it best she has had in a long time.

Therefore, I propose a June 2 lunch flyin at Jack Edwards Airport (JKA) in Gulf Shores. Lulus restaurant is about 1/4 mile + from FBO, but transportation may be a problem, so I'll have some method arranged for Sat. June 2, if I can get a reading on how many are coming. Lulus is crowded after Memorial Day, so suggest an 11:00 (central time) target arrival time at the restaurant to try to beat the crowds and get best seating. If I know number coming, I have arranged to call Lulus night before and they'll try to get us all together, but it's still first come - first served.

Are we still shooting for 11 am show up?

I'm not sure if I'll make it but wanted to know the current plan.

Yall have fun, Wish I could make it. I was born and raised in Mobile but somehow have found myself stuck up here in Oregon. Hope to move back down there after retirement but not sure if wifey would agree.

Plan on two more for lunch. Weather allowing, Becky and I plan on getting to the airport there in Gulf Shores around 10:30. Save some shrimp for us (boiled shrimp, fried shrimp, shrimp scampi.........)

Hi

As of 12 noon CT Friday, Wx forecast for the region around Gulf Shores, AL is:

KMOB 011139Z 011212 00000KT 5SM BR BKN250
FM1400 09008KT P6SM SCT025 BKN250
FM1800 12012G18KT P6SM SCT030 BKN250

FM1800 12014G20KT P6SM SCT025 BKN250
FM0100 15006KT P6SM FEW035 BKN250

Surface Graphics forecast looks good for VFR. Of course things change over the next 24 Hrs, but with the absence of any frontal acivity in the area, my guess is Wx will be good.

I will be at airport (KJKA) just before 11:00 to transport arrivees to Lulus, and will run shuttle service as needed, if I'm not at the airport, I'll be in transit to/from Lulus. Call me at number below.

My wife Faye will be at Lulus from 11:00 on to meet/greet. Seating is FCFS, so can't guarantee that we'll all be able to sit together, but a larger group at one time will probably (hopefully) be able to stay together. If you let me know tonight by e-mail, I'll run a total of expected attendees, and hopefully Faye can reserve that number at 11:00, but they don't lack for customers on weekends so don't know if they'll be that accomodating.

Tom cell number is (205) 296-7236,
Faye cell number is (205) 960-5033
Vehicle phone number is (205) 873-4902

Mike Earrey (662) 574-2551 will also be stopping by JKA for added transport, which will be very helpful because I hope a big mob of BACers is coming. The area is locally known as the Redneck Riviera, so I'll be driving my pickup truck (extended cab-you won't have to ride in the bed).

Y'all come

Tom K

Thanks Tom. If VFR, I will be there. Plane is out of annual as of yesterday so I am good to go. Hopefully we will have a large crowd for some good grub.

Are you going to have lawn chairs in the back of that there truck for a transport vehicle?

Cloyd has already been telling me to get that Instrument ticket. Now that my annuals are getting cheaper I might have the funds to start later this year.

Hi

Good food, weather, and great companionship, discussions enjoyed by Mike and Judy Earrey, their lovely daughters Mary and Anna (Anna plays phantom piano), Gene and Becky McPherson, and Tom and Faye Kinstler. The McPhersons get the distance award coming from Arkansas, while The Earreys and Kinstlers are tied for the sore fanny award due to long drives to Gulf Shores.

Looking forward to the next BAC SE region event

Tom:

Thanks again for arranging this fly-in/shrimp feast. Becky and I had a great time meeting you and Faye and renewing our friendship with Mike and Judy Earrey. Also enjoyed getting to meet Anna and Mary.

We had a VERY interesting trip home. We hit a line of weather just as we crossed the Mississippi into Louisiana. We traveled 3/4 of the way across Louisiana to Nachitoches before we could turn north toward Magnolia. The nexrad was worth its weight in gold helping us to weave in and out of the storm cells. Got a little too close just south of Sawmill VOR and got bumped up and down and into some moderate rain (I'm glad we missed the purple cells showing on the Airgator WXWORX PDA.)

We enjoyed getting to do it and, like Tom, look forward to the next BAC get together.
