ICE RUNWAY Fly-In

corcoran

Orbiting Earth
ICE RUNWAY IS OPEN TODAY Sunday 3/8/15

Location: Alton Bay, Lake Winnepesauke, New Hampshire
Free
Anytime this winter... Due to crappy weather on February 21.
See the latest arrangement.

The report from New Hampshire AirBoss Ron Cribbie is that
LAKE WINNEPESAUKE IS FROZEN but the recent blizzard has delayed snow plowing.

Normally B18 is an official FAA seaplane runway but BAC arranges for it to freeze for our fly-in.
Call the recorded phone number 603 875-3498 for a daily recording on conditions.

The alternate is Emerson Aviation FBO at Laconia, New Hampshire KLCI about 6 miles north.

Remember: "Musketeers Do Not Float!". Land carefully and taxi s-l-o-w-l-y!
More info closer to date.

Lunch is dutch treat at the restaurant near the ice runway.

Tom Corcoran, NE Region Director

Persinger and I are thinking about flying in for this. We will probably overnight and head back out on Sunday. Where should we stay and how do we get there and get around while there? Is there a rental car or taxi service anywhere local?

Where is the nearest place for pond hockey ? This should be Wicked fun. Is there any special tire pressures to use ? Coach Bilichick has me concerned about the quick barometric changes that happen up there.

Tom, are ya sa'in that ya'll have to throw a rope round their legs and drag em off the ice? Now that's a video I want to see!

I am hoping that Tom will be able to join us on Tuesday Feb 24 at the imeet flight ops discussion and bring the ice landing report to add to our talk.

As of 8am EST on Wednesday 2/18/15 the ice runway B18 is NOT open.
Due to the volume of snow and low temperatures, plowing is not easy and not yet complete.
THIS MEANS THAT CONDITIONS FOR THE FLY-IN ARE "IFFY".
The weather up the East Coast this weekend is a crap shoot.
Some snow, some rain, some sun, maybe ice aloft.
Airports along the way may or may not be open.
Try Manchester NH KMHT or Laconia NH KLCI for reports.
Planes tieddown around the Boston area are mostly not yet dug out.
The recorded message at Alton Bay 603 875-3498 says the ice may be useable by the weekend.
Your best source of information is to call that number.

Tom, the weather doesn't look good for us. Snow Saturday and rain Sunday down here. I think snow there both days. We will bail for now but if it clears later on, we may make the trip.

Yes. The weather is crappy. So,
New situation on the Northeast's signature event.

Land at B18 any time this winter. Earn a premium gift.
(Special Beech Aero Club 40 piece socket set - signed by a BAC Director)

If two members meet on the ice, landing two planes of any make, each gets a BEECH BUM t-shirt as well!

Email a single photo of you/the plane/ice runway at Alton Bay, NH to me at mediareps@aol.com.
You'll get your socket wrenches and t-shirt.

Watch for notice of "3 airports, 3 states, only 17nms".

Actually, it appears Tom that you have been engaging in false advertising. KWST -> KGON ->0B8 is only 15.7nm according to SkyVector.com!

Technically Dr. White you are correct.
However, you will not be flying from the center of each airport and landing in the center of each airport.
For fuel purposes I have extrapolated an extra 1.3nm.

For those who are curious, there is only one place in the USA where you can take-off and land at three different airports in three separate states and only fly 15.3~17nms.
That is Westerly Rhode Island, Fisher's Island, New York and Groton, Connecticut.

There will be an official Northeast fly-in which incorporates the above route. Likely, it will include 1B2 where you land on Katama's 4,000' grass runway and taxi up for the day to South Beach, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts.

Watch for details this spring.
