Haitian Relief Effort

In The Pattern
Upon hearing about the earthquake in Haiti, I really wanted to load up the plane and go down and help these folks. As you know, that is just not a reality for our small planes.

I learned of an organization that is and has been on the ground in Haiti assisting even before this tragedy. I have been in contact with them this morning, due to a Facebook post requesting some assistance in installing a telephone system in their facilities in Ft. Pearce, FL. This is the work that my company, Mountain Communications, does every day.

I am in the process of getting an inventory of what they have been given for this system and what they are going to need. I am going to post a request for equipment donations on one of the phone tech boards and see if I can get the rest of the equipment donated.

Once I have this information and can get the equipment here, I am going to fly down there and spend a couple of days installing this equipment for them. It would be nice to have some additional help, both on the ground and in the air.

There will need to be some wiring done and some equipment flown down. I would estimate that it would take a couple of days on the ground to complete the task.

I'm posting this to see if there is any interest in making this a club project. Let me know what you think.

You can check them out on the web www.missionaryflights.org

Ed-
I have been thinking about ways the Club could help but it seems that things are very unorganized and maybe even to the point of having too much thrown at the problem.

As you say, getting there in our planes is not gonna happen and since I am in Utah, there isn't much help I can personally provide.

Help me understand more about the project you are embarking on. How does a phone system in Ft. Pierce help? How many bodies do you need? Where do you meet? Etc.

Thanks and good luck!

Chris,

Things being unorganized is exactly a concern that I have had in giving assistance to groups.

This particular group has been on the ground in Haiti since long before this tragedy struck and if you visit their website you will see that they are running a fleet of cargo planes to take supplies in and get people out.

The phone system that I am going to install in Ft. Pierce, Fl is at their staging facility there. This is where the supplies are stored and loaded into the planes.

Chris,

What we would need is for 3 or 4 people to fly / drive to Ft. Pierce and work with me for a couple of days installing some phone cabling and the system in their facility on the field.

Bahamas to Haiti

Chris, I registered to help over a week ago and not 1 word from them. They say they need GA to go to 3 small airports around the country. to bring supplies in to outer areas and bring people back.
Volunteered for a week. We will see.

Ed, please let us know what you find out. That's exactly what I want to do. I've go the vacation time and would really like to help. My jug is supposed to take a week...

On a related note, I've been researching a lot lately how to help others with my Musketeer. Of course most people know about Angel Flight, but there are many other organizations that can use our aircraft and time. I'll start another thread devoted to this topic... would love to hear ideas, and more so experiences from others.

Chris,

I responded also, and filled out the forms. I will check again after I get my plane back. Does your ins carrier cover you for this? Mine does not.

I can't speak for the Habitat project and why no follow up from them.

As far as the project that I posted about - This is just a quick trip down, install some equipment, run some phone wiring and come home. I'm thinking 2 days at most.

I heard back this morning from my telecom forum and someone has donated the rest of the equipment that these folks need.

I'll be talking with them on Monday to set a date.

Chris, Keep me posted on the repair. Hopefully this will work out as I would love to have you come.

Thanks,
ED
