June 22, 2024 12noon ET fly in KUNV

Come out to central PA to have lunch and chat about airplanes

KUNV is the airport that supports State College, PA including Penn State.

Meet at 12 noon and have a seat in the lounge.

Activities will include local lunch and ice cream dessert.

Hope to see some hungry pilots.

Holy smokes what a coincidence, was just there at KUNV / State College last weekend, I didn’t see this thread until just now.

I was doing Glider Winch Launch training at Eagle Field nearby. It’s crazy, the winch engine is an old Corvette big block bolted to a Frankenstein tractor. When the cable engages, you feel 1 G acceleration and are going upward at 45 degree climb angle. Probably the closest thing a civilian can feel to being catapult launched off an Aircraft Carrier.

Also, For what it’s worth, local pilots there told me that nearby N96 “Bellefonte” airport is inhospitable to non-local pilots. One flat out told me “only land Bellefonte if it’s an emergency”.

I've made 3 carrier catapult launches. 1G isn't even close. I had "soft shots" in S-2/C-1s and it was 3+Gs. The jets were twice that.

I have never been into Belafontaine. I'm a regular at KUNV and KRVL.

Hopefully you can come next time.

Nice Ice Cream Cone... Where I am at with the Temps it might last 5 Minutes before it returns to a Liquid State... I hope it is/was as good as it looks!

Never knew there was a winch set up in PA. I will need to go and get Winch Lance added to my Glider ratings. I have Aero, Auto and Self Launch but never found a winch in the area.

Robert, after I am out of the Hospotal we will have to go get some more of that good looking ice cream.

After 8 days of liquid diet here in the hospital I am a little sick of ice cream at the moment though.
